PCRM Sponsors 5th World Congress on Alternatives
PCRM has become a sponsoring organization for the 5th World Congress
on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences meeting scheduled
for August in Berlin, Germany. This international conference provides
a forum for scientists from industry, government agencies, academia,
and animal advocacy organizations to discuss strategies for reducing
the numbers of animals used in research and testing.
Although the 5th World Congress meeting agenda focuses on “the
3Rs”—an old approach of reduction, replacement, and
refinement of animal experiments—PCRM scientists are attempting
to work collaboratively with other organizations to focus primarily
on the replacement aspects: eliminating animal use in education,
research, and testing in favor of better methods.
Sherry Ward, Ph.D., PCRM’s associate director of research
advocacy, attended three of the previous World Congress meetings
to present her research on the development, characterization, and
validation of human corneal and conjunctival ocular models for replacing
the Draize rabbit eye test. Dr. Ward was a member of the Sponsors’
Planning Committee for the 5th World Congress.
